Bıttım Soap Making Ingredients Set
Traditional Menengiç & Olive Oil Cold Process Soap Ingredients
Create your own traditional Bıttım-style handmade soap with a carefully prepared combination of menengiç oil, olive oil and sodium hydroxide.
This ingredient set is designed for the cold process soap-making method and provides the principal raw materials required to make a traditional-style soap based on equal amounts of menengiç oil and olive oil.
Bıttım soap is traditionally associated with southeastern Türkiye and is commonly made using oils derived from wild pistachio species, locally known as menengiç or bıttım, together with other vegetable oils depending on the regional method.
The combination of menengiç oil and olive oil produces a distinctive handmade soap with a traditional character, natural color and rich oil profile.
What Is Included?
920 g Soap-Making Oil Blend
The included oil blend consists of:
- 460 g Menengiç Oil
- 460 g Pure Olive Oil
These oils form the main fatty phase of the soap formulation.
117 g Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
Sodium hydroxide is the alkali used to convert the oils into solid soap through the saponification reaction.
It must be handled carefully and with appropriate protective equipment.
Important Note About the Formula
The supplied sodium hydroxide quantity has been prepared for the included oil blend according to the intended recipe.
However, water is not included in the set.
Before beginning production, always use the exact water quantity and procedure specified in the validated recipe supplied with the product.
Do not estimate the water quantity or alter the oil/lye ratio without recalculating the formulation with an appropriate soap calculator.
What Can You Make With This Set?
With this ingredient set, you can create:
- Traditional-style Bıttım soap
- Menengiç and olive oil cold process soap
- Handmade botanical-style soap bars
- Rustic artisan soaps
- Traditional Turkish-inspired soap
- Personal handmade soap projects
The natural color, texture and aroma of the finished soap may vary depending on the raw materials and production conditions.
What Is Menengiç Oil?
Menengiç oil is obtained from the fruit of wild pistachio species traditionally found in parts of Türkiye and the surrounding region.
It has long been associated with regional soap-making traditions and is valued for its distinctive fatty acid composition, color and characteristic aroma.
In handmade soap, menengiç oil can contribute to:
- A traditional appearance
- A distinctive oil profile
- Mild cleansing characteristics
- A characteristic natural color
- A unique artisan identity
The final properties of the soap depend on the complete formulation, curing conditions and production method.
Role of Olive Oil in the Formula
Olive oil is one of the most established oils used in traditional soap making.
In cold process soap, it can contribute to:
- A mild cleansing profile
- A smooth and creamy lather
- A firm bar after sufficient curing
- A classic handmade soap character
Olive oil soaps generally benefit from a proper curing period before use.
Cold Process Soap Making
This set is intended for cold process soap making, where vegetable oils are reacted with a carefully measured sodium hydroxide solution.
The main stages include:
- Preparing the work area
- Measuring and preparing the oil blend
- Preparing the lye solution using the validated recipe
- Combining the oil and lye phases
- Mixing to trace
- Pouring into a soap mold
- Allowing the soap to harden
- Cutting or unmolding
- Curing the soap for several weeks
Cold process soap making requires accurate weighing and careful handling of sodium hydroxide.
General Use Instructions
1. Prepare a Safe Workspace
Before starting:
- Wear chemical-resistant gloves
- Wear protective goggles
- Work in a well-ventilated area
- Keep children and pets away
- Use heat-resistant and alkali-compatible equipment
2. Prepare the Oils
Place the menengiç oil and olive oil in a suitable container.
Warm gently only if necessary to achieve a uniform liquid mixture.
3. Prepare the Lye Solution
Using the exact water amount specified in the validated recipe, slowly add sodium hydroxide to the water while stirring carefully.
Always add sodium hydroxide to water. Never pour water directly onto sodium hydroxide.
The solution will become hot due to the exothermic reaction.
Allow it to cool in a safe, ventilated location.
4. Combine the Oil and Lye Phases
When the oils and lye solution are within the appropriate working temperature range specified by your recipe, carefully combine them.
5. Mix to Trace
Blend the mixture until it reaches a stable emulsion and begins to thicken.
This stage is known as trace.
6. Pour Into the Mold
Pour the soap mixture into a suitable soap mold.
Keep the mold on a stable and level surface.
7. Allow to Harden
Leave the soap undisturbed until it is firm enough to unmold.
This generally takes approximately 24–48 hours, although the exact time may vary.
8. Cure the Soap
After unmolding, allow the soap to cure in a dry, ventilated environment.
A typical cold process curing period is approximately 4–6 weeks, although olive oil-rich soaps may continue to improve with longer curing.
Why Is Curing Important?
Curing allows excess water to evaporate and helps the soap become:
- Harder
- More durable
- Longer lasting
- More pleasant to use
- More stable in use
Do not judge the final performance of a cold process soap immediately after unmolding.
